Toni Brell works across sound, installation, and performance. Situated within a fine arts context and informed by a background in theatre, the work is structured as a form of expanded theatre, extending staging, presence, and audience relation beyond the traditional performance space. Grounded in affect, Brell creates intimate environments that hold shared attention where personal experiences can surface. Sound is used to access emotional states and to shift attention toward expanded forms of listening. Handmade objects and everyday materials become instruments, broadening who and what can produce sound. Working through a poetics of divergence, the practice engages neurodivergence as a lens on perception, attention, and relation. It draws on histories and narratives related to divergent forms of experience, including mental health and animality, to reflect on systems of categorisation that structure what is recognized as “normal”. Traditional forms, such as horn-blowing, vocal practices, and craft are recontextualised to examine and unsettle these norms. Through repetition and accumulation, Brell constructs spaces where meaning emerges gradually, inviting audiences to listen and locate their own experiences within the work. Since 2023 Brell teaches Narration in Space at Design Academy Eindhoven.
